The First Pitch

Well if you found yourself here, you probably at least like baseball. For my first blog post, I wanted to introduce what this is going to be all about. But first, here's a little about me.

As a senior at The University of Texas, I have obtained knowledge on the analytics behind baseball. I'm now in my fourth year of working for The University of Texas' Baseball program in their analytics and video department. Along the way, I have studied Computer Science as well as Business in order to one day end up in the Front Office of an MLB team. I plan to further study the intersection between Computer Science and Business at UT with a Masters of Science in Business Analytics degree. In terms of baseball, I have been surrounded by the game since I was born. My dad and I held season tickets for the Astros as well as attended college games in the area during the spring. Both of my parents have also continued to encourage me to pursue a career in baseball. This encouragement has led to my job with the UT baseball team, The Winter Meetings, and a summer internship as a Data Analyst for TrackMan Baseball (which unfortunately was cancelled due to the pandemic). My career in baseball won't stop there.

The next step for me is a baseball blog displaying some of my projects and baseball interests. Now, there are hundreds of baseball analytics blogs out there.. Why mine? Instead of the creation new statistics that may or may not be beneficial for a team to view, I want to demonstrate how to use the available statistics to better evaluate players using data visualizations. I also want this to be a learning experience for myself whether it be polishing up my SQL code, learning an entire new programming language, or diving deeper into the numerous statistics on sites like Baseball Prospectus.

As for the schedule of posts, I will post one main article per week, which will discuss a project in-depth. If time permits, I will post smaller articles (quick 2-3 minute reads) as well that detail some interesting findings along the way. Also, I will be posting any and all code that was used in my projects. I want an open-source environment for others to make suggestions or corrections for my code.

As a preview for my first post that will come sometime next week, I will look into how active spin and spin efficiency affect movement on fastballs. This topic has become of increasing importance due to the rise of the four-seamer and the decline of the sinker. While this may seem like a fairly generic topic, active spin has been one of my main interests to look at over the past few years. Compared to many other pitching metrics, I don't think there is enough out there on the true effects of active spin. Look for my first project post later next week!
